In 1993 the National Association of Criminal Justice Planners awarded Dr. Tanner the prestigious Weller Award in recognition of his excellence in utilizing statistical data to enhance criminal justice planning.

In 1999 the Colorado Association of Community  Corrections Boards awarded Dr. Tanner an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the association for his outstanding service to Community Corrections.
